Masked Backgrounds

Create unique backgrounds in just a few simple steps! All you need is card blank, some low tack tape, distress ink and ink bending tools.

It's much easier to buy a pack of patterned paper and stick it onto your card, you may think. I agree. But it's not as fun as making your own unique background. I have tons of patterned paper in my craft room but I hardly ever use it, apart from making 3D projects. It takes up a lot of space, especially those big 12 x 12 papers. We are moving house in couple of monhts and to be honest, I am dreading it purely because of the paper weight! And of course, I have zillions of crafty stuff (hoarders please put your hands up! Me! Me!).

The best inks to use to create the backgrounds are either the Distress inks or the Distress Oxide inks. Both work well and enable you to create uniform looking stripes (if that's what you are after). You can of course make the stripes look different by simple pressure adjustment. Then you need a low tack tape. I like to use the purple tape from Hunkydory. It's really low tack and if you are careful enough, it doesn't damage your card when you are peeling it off (unlike for example masking tape, which is fine to use with thicker watercolour paper but not the standard 270 to 300 gsm).

The second card is based on the same principle as the first card. The only difference is that you are blending two different inks together. Having a single bold strip on your card creates a nice focal point and you can turn a simple card into an interesting one just by adding few more extra elements as I did with the trees, stars and Santa's sleigh. Interestingly enough, both Hearts Come Home from Stampin' Up! stamps and Winter Skies from Lawn Fawn include a very similar Santa's Sleigh stamp.

Watch the video below to see how I created these cards. Please note that this post doesn't contain many links. I will add these after Christmas once things calm down a bit. Alternatively, email me if you have any question about the products used.
